3 (Unofficial) Most Beautiful Beaches In Okinawa

Okinawa, Japan, October 18th, 2023

Okinawa, a beautiful archipelago at the southern tip of Japan, is famous for its stunning beaches. With crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, each island is packed with picture-perfect beaches waiting to be explored.

We visited Okinawa in October 2023 and stayed for five days. Eventhough we couldn’t explore the entire island in our limited time, we had wonderful experience at three beautiful beaches that left us with great memories. These are must-visits that you should definitely check out too!

Sakimotobu Green Space

Tucked away in the region of Motobu, Sakimotobu Green Space Beach offers a serene escape from the busier tourist spots in Okinawa.

What makes this beach truly special is its reputation as a premier spot for diving and snorkeling. The water here is incredibly clear and calm, providing perfect conditions for underwater exploration.

The underwater world at Sakimotobu is vibrant and teeming with life. We joint a snorkeling tour and were amazed by the vibrant coral reefs and the abundance of tropical fish. The diversity of marine life was stunning, with colorful fish and other sea creatures creating a mesmerizing underwater landscape. And since this beach isn’t usually frequented by tourists, it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves.

Parking is free and plentiful at Sakimotobu Green Space. The beach also has amenities like changing rooms and toilets, and you can take a shower for a fee using one of the coin-operated showers. The facilities are free pretty clean and well maintained , like most places in Japan.

The downside about Sakimotobu Green Space is the limited food and beverages options in the area. We didn’t even see any vending machines when we were there.

There is a small drive-in restaurant further down the road called Drive-in Restaurant Hawaii, but there were no convenience stores or cafes within walking distance.

People mainly come here for diving and snorkeling and they typically drive elsewhere to eat. So, be sure to pack lunch and bring plenty of water when you visit.

For those looking to explore the deeper waters, several diving companies operate in the area, offering a range of services. These companies provide guided diving tours and equipment rentals, making it easy to dive into the clear, calm waters of Sakimotobu.

Sunset Beach

As its name suggests, Sunset Beach is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets. Arriving in the late afternoon, We were able to see the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors. The sunset view over the East China Sea is truly a sight to behold and provides the perfect backdrop for photos or a romantic evening.

Located in Chatan Park, Sunset Beach is particularly family-friendly. The calm waters and ample amenities cater well to visitors with children. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, and the overall atmosphere is welcoming and safe.

Sunset beach is more known for relaxation and spending time together with friends and family. It has plenty of picnic tables in shaded area, making it ideal for leasurely day out. There are also BBQ pits available to rent if you’d like to cook a meal for your group. It’s a perfect spot for a beachside picnic.

One of the highlights of visiting Sunset Beach is its proximity to American Village. This lively area offers a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options.

Arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the beach and stay for the stunning sunset. Walk over to the American Village for evening entertainment with plenty of food options.

Sunset Beach in Okinawa offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and a lively atmosphere that makes it a must-visit destination.

Whether you’re looking to unwind on the sandy shores, engage in exciting water activities, or enjoy a picturesque sunset, this beach has something for everyone. The convenient location near American Village adds to the overall experience, making it a perfect day out.

Ikei Beach

Ikei Beach is situated on Ikei Island, which is connected to the Okinawan mainland via the scenic Kaichu Doro Drive. It’s a stunning destination that promises a blend of natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere.

The drive to this beach is a treat in itself. The beach is about an hour and half’s drive from Naha, where we stayed.

Kaichu Doro is a stunning 2.9 mile-long bridge. In the middle of the bridge, there’s a convenient pit stop where you can pick up omiyage (gift shop), enjoy a meal and grab some Blue Seal ice cream.

This picturesque drive takes you over crystal-clear waters, setting the tone for the beautiful experience awaiting you at the beach. There are interesting places to stop by on the way.

Upon arriving at Ikei Beach, I was immediately struck by its pristine beauty. The soft, white sand and clear, turquoise waters create an idyllic setting that is perfect for both relaxation and recreation. The beach is well-maintained and offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Unlike the other beaches we visited however, Ikei Beach is a private beach that opens from 10:00am to 5:00pm, so best to head there earlier in the day if you want to stay longer. There’s also a fee to enter. When we’re there, it’s about ¥400 per person.

The facility is equipped with typiccal beach necessarity like changing rooms and toilet, and you can take a shower for a fee using one of the coin-operated showers. Covered picnic table and equipments like floating tubes, BBQs, and all kinds of water sports are available for rent as well.

There sia a small convinience store in the main entrance, but it was closed when we were there. But tehre a few vending machines available.

My visit to Ikei Beach was a highlight of my Okinawa trip. The combination of pristine natural beauty, excellent snorkeling conditions, and a peaceful atmosphere made for a truly memorable experience. Whether you’re looking to relax on a quiet beach, swim in crystal-clear waters, or explore vibrant coral reefs, Ikei Beach has something to offer everyone.
